EU approves nearly 1,600 new sanctions targeting Russia's military industry

October 12

European Union (EU) foreign ministers today, October 12, approved nearly 1,600 new sanctions primarily targeting Russia's military industry and its guided missile production chain.

EU foreign policy chief Kaja Kallas said more than half of the new sanctions are related to Russia's guided missile production chain.

These include organizations and individuals involved in the production process of Russia's 9M723 Iskander-M guided missile, which can only be intercepted by the US-made Patriot air defense system.

Currently, as the United States is diverting military resources toward the Gulf region, Patriot interceptor missiles are nearly depleted in Ukraine, and at a time when air defense capabilities are weakening, Russia is taking advantage and increasingly carrying out attacks with guided missiles.

The sanctions list also includes missile testing and research operations, missile engine and fuel producers, drone manufacturers, as well as shipyards that repair and maintain submarines.

In addition, 77 Russian politicians who ran in elections in Russian-occupied Ukrainian territories have been added to the sanctions list, and the EU has also sanctioned 7 North Korean organizations and individuals believed to be assisting Russia's military efforts.

Russian President Vladimir Putin has responded that he will not resume diesel fuel exports abroad until the sanctions are lifted.

Due to the Iran war and Ukraine's attacks on Russian oil refineries, supply and demand in the global diesel market have become imbalanced, and diesel fuel shortages are also occurring inside Russia.
