Police in Japan are interrogating a 53-year-old man who lived in a house with his mother's corpse for nearly two years, it is learned.

The incident occurred in the city of Isesaki, Japan, and came to light after a city official notified police that an elderly person was missing without a trace, it is said.

According to the report, police went to the home of Takehiro Hashizume, who lives in Isesaki, to question him, and Hashizume initially lied, claiming his mother was hospitalized.

Because police were suspicious, they entered and searched the house, and found the mother's corpse, reduced to only a skeleton, on the living room floor, it is said.

When the body was found, Hashizume also reportedly said, "This body is my mother; she is still alive to this day."

According to the police's initial investigations, Hashizume, an unemployed man, had continued living with his mother's corpse, believed to have died about two years ago, and no signs of external injuries were found on the body, it is said.

Currently, police are arresting and interrogating Hashizume on suspicion of concealing his mother's corpse, and are also investigating in detail the cause of his mother's death and whether there was an intent to continue collecting her pension, it is learned.

Similarly, in Spain last month, a 25-year-old man was arrested on charges of hiding his father's decomposing corpse in a wardrobe for a year and a half. Spanish police believe the man did this in order to continue receiving his father's pension payments.
