Taiwan Strongly Objects to China's Attempts to Distort and Rewrite World War II History

Taiwan has objected and responded that China's inclusion of remarks about the two countries having been allies during World War II during the meeting between Chinese President Xi Jinping and U.S. President Donald Trump is an attempt by Beijing to distort military history.

At a state dinner in Washington on September 24, both the Chinese and American leaders praised how they had fought together as wartime allies, and the White House also issued a statement saying that the United States and China had fought shoulder to shoulder.

Taiwan is deeply concerned about this situation and is carefully watching with caution that Washington may follow behind Beijing's interpretation of history and that arms support may decline.

Democratic-ruled Taiwan, for its part, pointed out that the government that actually fought alongside the allies during that era was the Republic of China (ROC), which retreated to Taiwan in 1949 after being defeated by Mao Zedong's communists.

Deputy head of Taiwan's Mainland Affairs Council, Hsu Yu-chun, and Deputy Foreign Minister Francois Wu also said that the People's Republic of China (PRC) is attempting to replace and erase true military history, and that they will continuously clarify to make the United States correctly understand that the true allied military force was the government of the Republic of China (ROC) only.

Last year as well, the American Institute in Taiwan (AIT), which operates as a de facto U.S. embassy based in Taipei, once warned that China is spreading false World War II historical facts.

At a seminar held on September 27, an associate professor in Taipei pointed out that the Chinese communists are using their massive propaganda machinery to try to influence American public opinion.

On the other hand, Taiwan's main opposition Kuomintang Party also criticized that President Lai Ching-te's government, while its historical facts are correct, only pulls out and uses the 1945 ROC history when it becomes necessary to counter Beijing and to gain political advantage.
