Trump Says He Is Discussing Nuclear Weapons Elimination with Russia and China

October 16

US President Donald Trump said on October 15 that meetings and discussions are being held with Russia and China to reduce and eliminate nuclear weapons among the countries possessing the most nuclear warheads.

According to data from the Stockholm International Peace Research Institute (SIPRI), Russia possesses the most stored nuclear warheads, while the United States and China rank second and third respectively.

However, it is said that in terms of currently deployed nuclear warheads, the United States has more than Russia.

President Trump made these remarks in an exclusive interview with Newsmax television, and also assessed that within the next 5 years, China's nuclear capability could catch up with the United States.

"If possible, I want to completely eliminate nuclear weapons. This ongoing arms race is a frustrating matter. That is why we are holding real discussions with both Russia and China regarding nuclear weapons reduction," Trump said.

In addition, Newsmax television reported that President Trump has also discussed matters related to nuclear elimination with Chinese President Xi Jinping.

Trump's remarks come after the Strategic Arms Reduction Treaty (New START) between the United States and Russia expired earlier this year.

The New START treaty was first signed in 2010, and because it stipulated that the treaty's term could be extended only once, former President Joe Biden and Russian President Vladimir Putin agreed to extend it for 5 years.

Currently, in order to continue maintaining the restrictions under the treaty, both the United States and Russia are in a situation where they must make separate voluntary decisions and continue to comply.
