Candle burns out at Buddhist altar and fire spreads to house

October 23

A house fire in Lashio town was caused by a candle burning at a Buddhist altar, it is reported.

At around 6 a.m. on October 22, at a house on Thida Road, Ward (7), Thanlwin Ward, Zone (1), Lashio town, a Chinese-made candle burning at a Buddhist altar burned down and set fire to the altar, from which the fire spread to the house, it is reported.

"I heard it caught fire from a candle lit after morning prayers. The whole house was completely destroyed, it's pitiful — only elderly people lived there," a local resident said.

The Lashio District/Township Fire Services Department dispatched 5 fire engines, and regular and auxiliary fire service members worked together to extinguish the fire, which was put out at around 6:20 a.m., it is reported.

Currently, Lashio Town Police Station has opened a case against the homeowner under Section 285 of the Penal Code, it is reported.
