According to local news sources, a sexual assault occurred in Hlegu Township, Yangon Region, in which an elderly man sexually assaulted a 6-year-old novice nun who was out collecting alms.

The incident took place on September 18 at a house on Lu Gyi Min Road in Kyun Kalay Village, Hlegu Township, and it is understood that the house was one where young novice nuns would stop to eat their midday meal.

In the incident, while two young novice nuns were taking their midday meal break and an older nun was downstairs counting the cash received from alms collection, the 6-year-old novice nun is said to have followed a cat while playing with it and ended up on the upper floor of the house.

When she reached the upper floor, the male homeowner, who is over 60 years old, is said to have locked the room door and sexually assaulted the young novice nun, and after hearing the young nun's screams, the older nun, the homeowner's daughter, and nearby people surrounded the door, banged on it, forced it open, and caught him red-handed.

At present, the male homeowner who committed the act has been arrested, and the young novice nun has had to receive medical treatment, it is understood.

Local residents are also warning that when young novice nuns go out to collect alms, older nuns who can properly supervise them should accompany and look after them.
