"Nothing is more important than human life," says killer Min Aung Hlaing

October 13

An appointment ceremony to commission doctors (new graduates) and dentists (new graduates) from the Ministry of Health as gazetted civil service officers was held on the morning of October 12 at the Myanmar Convention Center in Yangon, and coup leader Min Aung Hlaing attended and delivered a speech.

In his speech, he said that in the health sector, under the policy that "nothing is more important than human life," work is being carried out at full pace for healthcare services so that every citizen can be healthy and live out their full lifespan.

In response to his remarks, a health CDM staff member said, "Actually, his statement that 'nothing is more important than human life' is quite laughable. Who is it that bombs people with aircraft almost every day, burns down villages and kills innocent people? Whose hands are behind doctors themselves—who should be saving lives—being arrested, imprisoned and killed? For such words to come out of their mouths is utterly shameless," the staff member told MyoTaw.

He also said that while the state government's health expenditure was only about 1.5 percent of total government spending in 2000, it has been increased to 2.8 percent, over 1,391 billion kyats, in 2026-2027, and that they will continue working to increase state funding annually to improve the health sector.

"I don't know why he keeps comparing with the year 2000. If anything, he should compare with the nearest period, the 2015-2020 people's government. Even if not that, comparing with the years when he himself appointed a president and ruled by force would be different. What he's doing now is comparing the situation 26 years ago with the present. And in reality, there's nothing to be seen on the ground of him actually improving the health sector and doing things effectively for the people," a CDM staff member told MyoTaw.

The coup leader said he places importance on the goal that "if there is a hospital, there must be doctors," and that healthcare is being provided to everyone regardless of urban or rural, rich or poor, but on the actual ground the situation is completely the opposite, and the coup military is carrying out indiscriminate airstrikes targeting schools, hospitals, clinics and villages where people live on an almost daily basis.
