In northern Shan State, a couple from Bant Bwe village in Nawnghkio Township was arrested and beaten by the coup military on allegations of being connected to a revolutionary force, according to sources.

On July 1, a couple in their 20s from Bant Bwe village, Nawnghkio Township, was returning from shopping at the Nawnghkio market when the coup military checked their phones and arrested them on suspicion of links to a revolutionary force, sources said.

"They were checked at a checkpoint on the way back from shopping. I don't know what they found in the phone. They were arrested there. They've been released now. They said that from the moment they were arrested, both were beaten and interrogated. They have injuries on their heads, backs, and legs. They are now receiving medical treatment and are not recovering well because the injuries are severe. They were arrested on suspicion and beaten, and forced to confess to being part of the revolutionary force," a local resident told MyoTaw.

The arrested couple had moved from Kyaukme town to Bant Bwe village in Nawnghkio Township. They were reportedly beaten and tortured for five days on suspicion before being released.

The coup military has also previously arrested, beaten, and interrogated some travelers and locals at the Wet Wun checkpoint near Bant Bwe village and at the entrance checkpoint to Pyin Oo Lwin, sources said.
