Tornadoes hit many townships in Lower Myanmar, causing widespread damage

Tornadoes struck several townships in Yangon Region, Bago Region, and Mon State, destroying homes and causing injuries, according to reports.

On the night of July 5, a tornado hit Bo Thoe Village in Oakkan Town, Hlegu Township, Yangon Region, damaging over 30 homes. Similarly, in two villages of Natthalin Township, Bago Region, a tornado destroyed more than 60 houses, sources said.

"In Kanthera Village, Palemakhan Group, Natthalin, over 60 houses were destroyed. Some homes were completely shattered, with nothing left to salvage. There were minor injuries but no fatalities. This morning, residents are cleaning up on their own. The tornado moved from this village toward Palemakhan, where there was also heavy damage," a local resident from Natthalin Township told MyoTaw.

Similarly, in Paung Town, Mon State, a tornado damaged numerous buildings, including monasteries and government offices, and injured several monks.

"According to records, 92 houses, two monasteries, and one community hall were destroyed. Seven monks were injured, two of them in critical condition. One monk may need to have his leg amputated," a member of a charitable organization told MyoTaw.

Late on the night of July 5, a tornado also struck near a branch high school in Ngaphyu Lay Village, Thayawady Township, Bago Region, damaging the school building.
