Woman suing Cornell University students over sexual assault faces threats

October 5

A woman who accused some Cornell University students in the United States of drugging and sexually assaulting her is facing pressure and threats to drop the case, her lawyer said on October 4.

The case dates back to 2024, and the woman, using the pseudonym "Jane Doe," has filed a civil lawsuit.

According to her lawyer, Thomas Jeffrey, the woman has repeatedly received threats that she would be silenced or harmed, and he himself has also been threatened.

As efforts emerged to expose Jane Doe's name online in connection with the case, some social media users have been showing their support for the accuser with the hashtag #IamJaneDoe.

Meanwhile, a freelance journalist named Michael Tracey posted a name online claiming it was the accuser's real name, but later deleted it and clarified that he had no intention of threatening the accuser.

Cornell University President Michael Kotlikoff also said that after criticism emerged over the way the university handled the case, he would review the role of student organizations on campus.

After criticism emerged over how Tompkins County prosecutors initially handled the case, New York Governor Kathy Hochul appointed state Attorney General Letitia James as a special prosecutor and tasked her with reinvestigating the case.

US President Donald Trump, however, criticized the appointment of James as special prosecutor, saying that as someone under investigation, she would not be treated fairly.

In response to Trump's remarks, lawyer Jeffrey said the case has nothing to do with politics and should not be used politically.
