A powerful magnitude 7 earthquake on the Richter scale struck China's southwestern Tibet Autonomous Region on the night of October 22, killing at least 16 people and injuring 32, according to reports.

Citing a statement from the emergency management department of Nagqu city, China's state-owned Xinhua news agency reported that 11 of the injured were seriously hurt while the remaining 21 sustained minor injuries.

The quake is also reported to be the strongest to hit China since January 2024.

The China Earthquake Networks Center (CENC) said the epicenter was in a mountainous area nearly 16,000 feet above sea level in the sparsely populated Nagqu county area of northern Tibet, at a depth of about 6 miles.

The epicenter was located about 250 miles from Lhasa, the capital of Tibet, but strong tremors were reportedly felt noticeably in surrounding areas.

Video footage showed residents rushing out of their homes during the quake and taking shelter in cars parked on the streets, while locals said houses shook and swayed from the tremors.

Rescue teams have now been dispatched to the affected areas, and the China Earthquake Networks Center (CENC) has warned that aftershocks of magnitude 3 and 4 have continued to occur.

Similarly, in 2010, a magnitude 7.1 earthquake struck neighboring Qinghai province, killing at least 2,698 people and leaving nearly 300 missing.
