North Korea Questions US Readiness to Confront China Over Taiwan

October 8

North Korea has criticized the United States for selling weapons to Taiwan and providing military assistance, saying these actions are further worsening military tensions in the Taiwan Strait.

In an article by international affairs expert Kim Myong-chol published by the Korean Central News Agency (KCNA), it was criticized that the US policy on Taiwan is undermining regional stability.

It specifically condemned the matter of the US sending US-made fighter jets to Taiwan, and warned that the United States should carefully consider whether it is truly ready to directly confront China over Taiwan's security, and whether it can handle the subsequent consequences of such a confrontation.

Of the 66 F-16V Block 70 fighter jets that Taiwan ordered starting in 2019, the first 2 only arrived in Taiwan last week.

At the same time, KCNA reported that Kim Jong Un, in a message sent for Vladimir Putin's birthday, pledged to continue supporting Russia's war efforts.

It said Kim Jong Un stated that cooperation would be expanded under the comprehensive strategic partnership signed between the two countries, and that he believes Russia's "just and sacred war" being fought to protect sovereignty and territory will end in victory.

Although the message did not directly mention the Ukraine war, according to estimates by Ukraine and South Korea, North Korea has sent between 14,000 and around 15,000 North Korean troops to help Russia since 2024.

After Russia and North Korea signed a mutual defense agreement in June 2024 between Putin and Kim Jong Un, the two countries' military and diplomatic relations have been becoming significantly stronger.
