One person dies from suspected plague in Russia, 189 placed under quarantine, Putin government accused of trying to cover up the news
October 4
One person has died from a suspected case of bubonic plague in the Siberia region of Russia, and 189 people have been placed under emergency quarantine and are being monitored, according to The Sun news outlet.
There have also been widespread allegations that the Putin government is working to suppress the news regarding this emergency situation.
Daria had fallen ill during a research trip to the Russia-Mongolia border, and some Russian media are reporting that she was infected after accidentally breaking a test tube containing the plague pathogen in the laboratory, but this has not yet been officially confirmed by Russian authorities.
However, Mikhail Favorov, a senior Russian infectious disease specialist in the United States, has said that the explanation of infection from a broken test tube in the laboratory is extremely unlikely, and warned that this situation is quite similar to the situation when COVID first emerged in Wuhan, China.
Currently, 189 suspected cases, including those who had contact with Daria, are being quarantined and monitored with restricted movement at the Shelekhov township hospital, another hospital, and research centers, it is said.
Due to this situation, panic and alarm have arisen among residents of the Irkutsk region, and reports have emerged that antibiotics are running out in pharmacies due to panic buying, while Irkutsk regional governor Igor Kobzev has also said that public gatherings have been canceled.
Putin's top infectious disease specialist, Anna Popova, herself rushed to the Siberia region more than 2,600 miles from Moscow, but the Russian government is still remaining silent and covering up the type of disease and details of the incident.
In addition, because the deceased Daria was initially misdiagnosed with COVID and treated with a ventilator, there was a risk that the plague pathogen could have spread to others, and reports have also emerged that Russian authorities will not reveal the truth but are trying to suppress the news.
