Taiwan Strongly Protests Xi Jinping's Urging of Trump to Change Stance on Taiwan

Taiwan's government has strongly protested and condemned Chinese President Xi Jinping's urging of the United States to adhere to a stance opposing Taiwan independence during his meeting with U.S. President Donald Trump in Washington.

Xi stated that the United States should follow the "correct stance" by supporting China's position of "reunification of one country" and opposing Taiwan independence.

This also represents a stricter formulation than the U.S. policy stance of "not supporting" Taiwan independence that has been used for many years.

Taiwan's Ministry of Foreign Affairs criticized Xi's remarks as misrepresenting facts and unilaterally expressing China's stance and demands.

Furthermore, it firmly responded that Taiwan's sovereignty and future must be decided only by the people of Taiwan through democratic means.

Although the United States does not have official diplomatic relations with Taiwan, it is a major ally and arms supplier. However, there are concerns among allied nations about whether President Trump might soften his stance on Taiwan in order to make economic concessions to China.

Analysts assess that while there is no immediate indication that the Trump administration will accept Xi's demands, even a change in wording in the U.S. stance on Taiwan could further impact uncertainty about whether the U.S. would assist Taiwan in an emergency.

Taiwan has stated that China is the main cause of undermining regional peace and stability, and has announced that it will continue to protect peace and stability in the Taiwan Strait by cooperating with the United States and other partner countries.
