Typhoon Chan-hom Halts Businesses in Taiwan, Cancels Over 900 Flights

Most businesses in Taiwan shut down due to Typhoon Champi, over 900 flights cancelled

October 23

With Typhoon Champi (Champi) approaching, most businesses across the island of Taiwan have been suspended, and a total of 931 domestic and international flights have been cancelled.

So far, the storm has killed 1 person and injured 94, while nearly 1,300 people have been evacuated to safety.

Champi, one of the strongest storms in the Pacific Ocean this year, has weakened, but wind speeds are still reaching 191 kilometers per hour, and the weather bureau has warned that it may still make direct landfall on Taiwan.

The storm's radius of strong winds is about 320 kilometers, meaning it could affect nearly the entire island of Taiwan and could last nearly 2 days, according to assessments.

Coastal cities could see winds exceeding 150 kilometers per hour, and northern regions, including the capital Taipei, could receive nearly 1 meter of rainfall, so phone alerts have been issued urging people to seek shelter immediately.

On October 23, Taiwan's financial markets were closed, and all 262 domestic flights and 669 international flights had to be cancelled, but the high-speed rail line running between north and south is still operating normally, it is understood.

The storm is expected to pass near northeastern Taiwan and head toward the Chinese coast, then continue moving toward southern Japan, according to forecasts.
