Man Dies After Being Stung by Giant Bees While Searching for "Wa" Mushrooms

October 8

It is reported that a man died from envenomation after being stung by giant bees in Mantong Township, northern Shan State.

Around 5:00 PM on October 5, U Kham Lwon, a 64-year-old resident of Pan Khar Lay Village in Mantong Township, was searching for "Wa" mushrooms along the forest edge beside the road leading from Pan Khar Lay Village to Pan Khar Gyi Village when he was stung by giant bees and died on the spot, according to reports.

"At the end of the rainy season and the start of winter, giant bees and hornets relocate their nests. That's the period when you have to be very careful. Every year, many people die from bee stings. Those who get stung suffer from oxygen deprivation and a drop in blood pressure. Even if they can be sent to the hospital in time, the danger to their life is still a concern," said a local from Pan Khar Lay Village.

On October 6, a person named Mai Nyi Sang reportedly discovered the body of the man who had died from bee stings, and with the help of nearby locals, they provided a burial, according to reports.

Previously, on September 19, two women who were picking tea leaves in Man Son Village, Kwan Har Village Tract, Namhsan Township, were stung by hornets, and both died a day apart from each other.

The Ta'ang Army (TNLA) has issued a warning advising those searching for "Wa" mushrooms and forest products in the forests and mountains to be cautious and avoid areas where bee nests and other insects may be present.
