Heavy rain expected across Myanmar due to low-pressure system; coastal areas urged to take special caution

According to forecasts from international meteorological agencies, the National Unity Government (NUG) has announced that a low-pressure area forming in the Andaman Sea and near Myanmar's southern coastline has strengthened and reached the level of a depression, and may continue moving north-northwest.

The depression may continue moving from near the Myanmar-Bangladesh coastline toward the northeastern Bay of Bengal and toward Bangladesh, it said.

Due to the depression's intensity, thick cumulonimbus clouds are forming over southern Myanmar and around the Andaman Sea, and heavy rain, lightning, thunder and strong winds may occur, it is reported.

Maximum wind speeds may reach around 35 to 40 miles per hour, and moderate to rough seas are forecast for Myanmar's waters and coastal areas.

Due to the depression's intensity, rain may fall across various parts of Myanmar, with heavy rainfall possible in Tanintharyi Region, Mon State, Kayin State, Kayah State, Bago Region, Yangon Region, Ayeyarwady Region, Rakhine State, Magway Region, Sagaing Region and Mandalay Region.

In particular, in Mon State, Kayin State, Yangon Region, Ayeyarwady Region and Rakhine State, there may be isolated heavy rain, strong winds, lightning, thunder and thundershowers, it is reported.

Therefore, as strong winds, heavy rain and rough seas may occur in coastal areas, fishing operations should be temporarily suspended, and people in low-lying and flood-prone areas should be mindful of the risk of flash floods caused by heavy rainfall.

Water-sensitive items should be moved in advance to elevated areas safe from water, and the elderly, children and persons with disabilities should also be relocated in advance to places safe from flood danger, the warning stated.

In addition, during lightning and thunderstorms, work in open fields and farmlands should be avoided, and those living near hills, mountains and shorelines also need to be mindful in advance of the risk of landslides and coastal erosion, the National Unity Government (NUG) announced.
