In Nyaung-U Township, Mandalay Region, two children who were drinking water from a roadside water jar stand stepped on a landmine, resulting in one death and one serious injury.
Around 3:00 PM on August 26, Maung Tun Min Aung, a 12-year-old Grade-4 student, and his younger brother Maung Kaung Pyae Sone, a 7-year-old Grade-3 student, from Ngalinpout Village Basic Education Primary School in Nyaung-U Township, were returning home together when they stopped to drink water from a roadside water jar stand and stepped on a planted landmine.
"The younger brother stepped on the mine in front of the water jar stand. Both his legs were severed and he died on the spot. The older brother is also in critical condition. It's hard to say which group did this in this area. People are afraid to even talk about it," a local resident said.
The children who stepped on the landmine are from Chaungwa Village. The surviving older brother was rushed to Nyaung-U Hospital by locals and is receiving medical treatment.
