Reports Emerge of Lower Sugarcane Purchase Prices at Innga Ngwe Khu Sugar Mill

Reports emerge that Inngaekhwa sugar mill will buy sugarcane at a reduced price

October 8

Reports are circulating that the Inngaekhwa sugar mill in Bago Region's Paukkaung Township will buy sugarcane at a lower price per ton than last year, and it is learned that sugarcane farmers are facing difficulties.

Last year, in 2025, the mill bought sugarcane at 170,000 kyats per ton delivered to the factory, but this year, because there are no sugar exports and domestic sugar prices have declined, it is learned that they are buying at a reduced price.

It is learned that the Inngaekhwa sugar mill will pay only 139,000 kyats per ton of sugarcane delivered to the factory, and because they are preparing to buy at a price more than 30,000 kyats lower than last year, farmers are facing difficulties due to sugarcane cultivation and harvesting costs and rising transport fees to the factory.

"Even if they paid around 170,000 like last year, it would still be barely tolerable. At the current price, if you calculate transport fees at 30,000, only 100,000 will remain in hand. With cultivation and harvesting costs and miscellaneous expenses, farmers lose their labor and have nothing left," said a sugarcane farmer.

Last year, in 2025, sugar mills in Sagaing Region bought sugarcane from farmers at lower prices than other mills, causing sugarcane farmers to suffer losses.

Because sugarcane farmers suffered losses, sugarcane cultivation in upper Sagaing Region has noticeably declined in 2026, and it is learned that sugar production may also decline in the coming years.
