Top Policy Adviser to South Korean President Resigns After Cabinet Reshuffle
September 1
The Blue House announced on September 1 that the president's top policy adviser has stepped down following a reshuffle of cabinet ministers and senior advisers, a move that comes as President Lee Jae-myung's approval ratings decline.
Kim Young-bum, who has resigned from his post, was a key adviser on the president's economic policies, including matters related to the housing sector and the stock market. A presidential spokesperson said President Lee accepted Kim's resignation on September 1.
The resignation comes after the presidential office announced a cabinet reshuffle on August 30, which included replacing six new ministers, including the ministers of economy and finance and land, as well as new senior presidential advisers.
In addition, President Lee had also appointed a new trade minister in late August.
According to a public opinion poll released on August 31 by polling agency Realmeter, President Lee's approval rating fell by 1.3 percentage points to 38.9 percent.
This marks the first time his approval rating has dropped to around 30 percent since he took office in June last year.
The polling agency analyzed that rising public concerns over soaring housing prices and rents were a major factor behind the decline in approval ratings.
