Three people have been arrested for impersonating officials of the military junta that seized power on social media and defrauding people of money by claiming they would secure the release of those detained under the conscription law, it is learned.

The three fraudsters were arrested separately in Taungoo, Shwekyin Township, and Myaungmya during September, it is learned.

The person who used the TikTok accounts 'Captain Thura Zaw' and 'Captain' to commit financial fraud was arrested in Taungoo on September 3; Soe Thura Aung, who used the TikTok account 'Min Ko Ko' to commit fraud, was arrested in Shwekyin Township on September 17; and the person who used the TikTok account 'Captain Htet Kaung Naing' to commit fraud was arrested in Myaungmya on September 26, it is learned.

"They exploit the fears people are living with and cheat them. Since detentions under the conscription law are actually happening out there, family members pin their hopes on it, thinking [the detainees] can be released. There are also people who collude with officials, take money, and arrange releases. They are operating openly with set price rates. They need to be actioned too," a family member of someone who was detained under the conscription law and paid money for a release told MyoTaw.

According to investigations, the three arrested individuals used photos and videos of people claiming to be officials of the military junta that seized power, opened fake accounts on social media, and defrauded people of money by claiming they would secure the release of those detained under the conscription law, it is said.

Currently, investigations are being carried out to take further legal action against the three arrested individuals, it is learned.
