MyoTaw: Heavy Monsoon Rains Expected Nationwide, River Levels Exceed Danger Mark in Some Cities

Due to strong monsoon winds, continuous rain is expected across the country, and river water levels in some major cities have exceeded the danger mark.

July 12

From July 12 to 19, the southwest monsoon winds over Myanmar are forecast to be strong to very strong, with continuous influx of rain clouds from the Bay of Bengal and the Andaman Sea, according to meteorologist U Win Naing.

In Sagaing Region (Upper), Kachin State, and Chin State, starting from July 15 onwards, rain clouds are expected to become denser, with rainfall amounts potentially reaching very high levels of around 150 to 250 millimeters.

In Tanintharyi Region, Rakhine State, and Mon State, continuous rain is expected due to monsoon winds blowing from the Andaman Sea, with rainfall amounts exceeding 200 millimeters in offshore areas.

In Shan State (North), Sagaing Region (Lower), Bago Region (East), Yangon, and Ayeyarwady Region, estimated rainfall of around 50 to 100 millimeters is expected, with conditions ranging from light drizzle to moderate regular rain daily.

In Magway Region, Mandalay Region, and Bago Region (West), rainfall is expected to be below 50 millimeters, with only scattered rain in some areas.

Regarding flood risks, continuous heavy rainfall in Sagaing Region (Upper) and Kachin State could cause water levels to rise along the Ayeyarwady and Chindwin river basins, leading to river flooding and lowland inundation.

For landslide risks, heavy rain is expected on July 15, 16, and 17 in mountainous areas of Chin State and Kachin State, so warnings have been issued to be cautious of landslides and road blockages.

Due to strong monsoon winds along the Rakhine coast and Tanintharyi coast, rough seas and strong winds are possible, so meteorologist U Win Naing has advised special caution for fishing and maritime activities.

According to the Department of Meteorology and Hydrology's announcement today, July 12, the Sittaung River water level at Madauk town has exceeded the danger mark of 1,070 centimeters, reaching 1,113 centimeters. Although it may drop by about half a foot within the next 24 hours, it is expected to remain above the danger level.

Similarly, the Thaungyin River water level at Myawaddy town has exceeded the danger mark of 963 centimeters, and it is expected to rise further to 1,028 centimeters within the next 24 hours.

The Chindwin River water level at Homalin town is expected to exceed the danger mark within the next 24 hours, reaching up to 2,921 centimeters.

Similarly, the Salween River water level at Hpa-an town is expected to exceed the danger mark within the next 24 hours, rising to 762 centimeters, and at Bilin town to 1,035 centimeters, both expected to remain above the danger level, according to the Department of Meteorology and Hydrology.
