MyoTaw: Heavy Monsoon Rains May Cause River Swells and Flooding in Some Regions

Due to strong monsoon winds, some regions may experience heavy rain and rising river levels, potentially leading to flooding.

July 8

Meteorologist U Win Naing has forecast that the southwest monsoon is strongly pushing into northern Myanmar and upper Sagaing Region (Hkamti, Homalin, Katha, Bhamo), which could result in heavy rain in upper Sagaing over the next seven days, while only moderate rainfall is expected in the lowland areas of lower Sagaing.

Due to continuous heavy rain in the upper reaches of the Chindwin and Ayeyarwady rivers, river levels could suddenly rise to the danger mark, potentially causing severe flooding along riverbanks and in low-lying areas, it is reported.

Meteorologist U Win Naing has estimated the total rainfall likely to be received within the week from July 9 to July 15 as follows: Rakhine State 350 mm to over 500 mm, Sagaing Region (Upper) 220 mm to 350 mm, Chin State 200 mm to 320 mm, Kachin State 150 mm to 250 mm, Mon State 140 mm to 240 mm, Kayin State 130 mm to 220 mm, Ayeyarwady Region 120 mm to 200 mm, Tanintharyi Region 100 mm to 180 mm, Yangon Region 100 mm to 170 mm, Bago Region (East) 90 mm to 150 mm, Bago Region (West) 70 mm to 130 mm, Sagaing Region (Lower) 60 mm to 120 mm, Shan State (South) 60 mm to 110 mm, Shan State (North) 50 mm to 100 mm, Naypyitaw 40 mm to 80 mm, Mandalay Region 30 mm to 70 mm, Magway Region 25 mm to 65 mm, Shan State (East) 20 mm to 55 mm, and Kayah State 15 mm to 50 mm.
