Chinese Nuclear Submarine Test-Fires Missile, Raising Concerns in Pacific Region

Concerns rise in the Pacific region after China test-fires a missile from a nuclear submarine

July 6

Japan, Australia, and New Zealand have expressed concerns over regional security after China's military test-fired a missile from a nuclear-powered submarine into the Pacific Ocean today, July 6.

According to Xinhua News Agency, the missile was fitted with a dummy warhead and was launched towards international waters, landing within a designated sea area. The report stated that this was merely an annual routine military exercise and was not aimed at any country.

However, Australian Foreign Minister Penny Wong criticized the test launch as an act that could undermine regional stability, adding that China's military expansion lacks transparency.

This launch occurred just hours after Australia and Fiji signed a defense pact to assist each other if attacked.

Mark Douglas, a New Zealand-based analyst monitoring ship movements, assessed that the missile test was likely planned long in advance, but it is interesting that China chose to announce it shortly after the Australia-Fiji defense pact was signed.

Regarding the defense pact, Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson Mao Ning responded by expressing hope that the relevant countries would respect the independence and self-determination of island nations and avoid targeting or harming the interests of third parties.
