ICRC confirms it met with State Counsellor Daw Aung San Suu Kyi

The International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) has confirmed that a delegate visited State Counsellor Daw Aung San Suu Kyi on August 3, according to an official statement.

The visit was carried out in accordance with the ICRC's standard procedures for visiting detained persons, and it was stated that a private meeting and conversation with Daw Aung San Suu Kyi was also granted.

Under the ICRC's operational procedures, such visits to detained persons provide the opportunity to exchange messages with family members, the statement said.

Observations and recommendations from this visit will be shared confidentially and exclusively with the relevant authorities, in line with ICRC policy, it added.

The statement also said the ICRC continues to work with all relevant institutions to maintain and expand access to prisons and detention facilities across Myanmar.
