MyoTaw: 10-Year Prison Sentences for Traffickers Selling Women as Chinese Brides

Those who arranged to transport and sell Myanmar women to China as Chinese brides have been sentenced to 10 years of hard labor and imprisonment under Section 35 of the Anti-Trafficking in Persons Law, according to reports.

In the incidents, Ma Kya Nyo (alias), aged 25, from Maubin Township, Ayeyarwady Region, and Ma Khin Moe Moe (alias), aged 23, from Kwan Chan Kone Township, Yangon Region, were lured, deceived, and persuaded while applying for work at a garment factory in Hlaing Tharyar Industrial Zone, according to reports.

It is said that Khin Thida Pyae (alias) Ma Thida, from (B) Ward, North Okkalapa Township, Yangon Region, persuaded the two women by telling them they would receive 10 million kyats if they worked as Chinese brides.

Investigations revealed that Ma Thida had coordinated with Khin Po Po Thet in China to arrange their transport and sale to China. As a result, North Okkalapa Township Police Station filed charges under Sections 35/44 of the Anti-Trafficking in Persons Law, and on July 28, the Mayangone District Court handed down a sentence of 11 years of hard labor and imprisonment, according to reports.

Similarly, Ma Thiri (alias), aged 31, who was working at Pan Phyo Khin KTV in Yay Mon Taung Ward, Mandalay, was persuaded by Aye Mar, from Shanyay Island East Village, Amarapura Township, Mandalay Region, who claimed to have contacts for those wishing to work as Chinese brides and said that working for one year would yield 10 million kyats. Investigations revealed that Aye Mar had contacted Kyaw Hlaing (alias) Ar Hlaing, from Amarapura Township, Mandalay Region, who arranged transport to China, to plan the sale of the woman as a Chinese bride. The No. (9) Myoma Police Station filed charges under Sections 35/44 of the Anti-Trafficking in Persons Law, and on July 30, the Maha Aung Myay District Court sentenced the arrested defendant Aye Mar to 10 years of hard labor and imprisonment, according to reports.

In the two incidents, the fugitive defendants Kyaw Hlaing (alias) Ar Hlaing and Khin Po Po Thet have been declared wanted and arrest warrants have been issued, according to reports.
