Six-Year-Old Child Drowns After Going Fishing with Friends While Grandparents Were Away

It is reported that a six-year-old child who lived with his grandparents drowned in the Thaungyin River at the Gram Myawaddy (13) gate in Ward No. (5), Myawaddy Town.

It is reported that on the evening of September 19, six-year-old Maung Htet Wai Kyaw slipped and drowned while going fishing with his friends in the Thaungyin River at the Gram Myawaddy (13) gate in Ward No. (5).

"The children went fishing in the whirlpool. This child who drowned was abandoned by his parents right after he was born, saying they were going to Thailand. His grandparents raised him, and they are also elderly now, renting a place in someone else's house. This happened while they were out working," a local resident said.

The deceased child's grandparents had left the child alone at home while they went to do day labor work toward Ywa Pyo village, and that was when the child drowned. Family members said they did not know the children had gone fishing.

"Four children went. When Htet Wai Kyaw drowned, they tried to rescue him together. Because it was a whirlpool, he kept sinking and going under, and in the end he did not come back up. His body was recovered in the evening," another local resident said.

It is reported that the deceased child will be buried on September 20 according to village traditional customs.
