Ward Administrator and Group Face Legal Action for Detaining a Young Man for 4 Days in Hlaingthaya

It is reported that a man returning from work was arrested and detained by a ward administration group on September 4 in front of Kyansit Min Housing on Kyansit Thar Road, Ward No. (8), Hlaingthaya (East) Township, Yangon Region.

It is reported that Ko Naing Naing Kyaw, a resident of Ward No. (6), Hlaingthaya (East) Township, was returning from the factory where he works on the night of September 4 when 6 men claiming to be a ward administration patrol group arrested him and took him to the Ward No. (8) office.

"He had been drinking beer on his way back from the factory. He hired a three-wheeler to return to the No. (3) milepost. The three-wheeler driver didn't take him to the third milepost but dropped him in front of Hlaingthaya People's Hospital. Since dogs were barking at night, when he crossed to the other side of the road, 6 people arrested him and took him to the ward office," said someone close to Ko Naing Naing Kyaw.

Ko Naing Naing Kyaw was detained at the Ward No. (8) office for 4 consecutive days, and it is reported that he was released at around 7 PM on September 8 after the Ward No. (6) administrator and group came to the Ward No. (8) administrator's office to negotiate and discuss the matter.

It is reported that Hlaingthaya (East) Township Police Station is opening a case and investigating U Tin Naing Soe (50 years old), administrator of Ward No. (8), Hlaingthaya (East) Township, who arrested and detained Ko Naing Naing Kyaw, along with Kyaw Kyaw Win (aka) Kyaw Gyi (27 years old), Lwin Moe (29 years old), Kyaw Htet Khaung (25 years old), Zaw Min (42 years old), and Kyaw Thet Paing (aka) Kyar Pauk — (7) people in total.
