At least 6 killed as Cyclone Annab strikes India

October 28

At least six people have died after the very severe Cyclone Annab made landfall on India's eastern coast, and power outages persist in many areas, authorities confirmed.

The storm, which formed over the Bay of Bengal, began making landfall in Andhra Pradesh state early on October 28, bringing strong winds and heavy rain, and the India Meteorological Department classified it as a very severe cyclonic storm, the third-highest category.

The storm damaged homes and uprooted trees, and local media reported that electrocutions may have raised the death toll to as many as nine, but the government has officially confirmed only six deaths.

In addition, more than 15,000 power poles were damaged, leaving some areas still without electricity, and rough seas have left a Marshall Islands-flagged cargo ship carrying 20 crew members stranded offshore until October 29.

The Chief Minister of Andhra Pradesh said that because residents were evacuated to safety before the storm arrived, damage to life and property was significantly reduced.

Due to the storm, authorities evacuated more than 180,000 residents of Andhra Pradesh and Odisha states to safety, some schools were closed, and some train and flight services were cancelled.
