September 14

A suspect believed to have robbed earrings and murdered an 11-year-old Grade-5 schoolgirl, Ma Saung Hnin Phyu, who was returning home from tuition in Pantaw Village, Maubin Township, Ayeyarwady Region, has been arrested, it is learned.

At around 3 PM on September 13, Ma Saung Hnin Phyu went to the home of Daw Khin Myint Zu, a tuition teacher who lives in the same village, for tuition, and because she had not returned home by around 5 PM when tuition let out, family members searched for her, it is learned.

After that, at around 8 PM, Ma Saung Hnin Phyu was found dead in a supine position under a bamboo clump beside the village road in Pantaw Village, with a cloth tied around her neck, according to police records.

When the body was found, a pair of earrings that Ma Saung Hnin Phyu had been wearing was no longer there, so local residents said it was possible she had been robbed and killed.

In connection with the incident, a man named U San Naing, believed to have committed the robbery and murder, was arrested on the morning of September 14, and a case has been opened at Tatapaw Township Police Station under Section 320 of the Penal Code, with further investigation ongoing, a person close to the police said.
