A group that hung a vinyl banner on a light truck and went around soliciting donations in Nyaung Khet Htauk town, Oktwin Township, Taungoo District, Bago Region, was arrested on August 31, it has been learned.

After receiving information that a group using a vinyl banner claiming to be a religious organization was soliciting donations within Oktwin Township, the Township Sasana Protection and Preservation Committee went to inspect and made the arrest, according to sources.

The group had previously been caught soliciting fraudulent donations in Pauk Taw village by the township Sasana protection committee, and the leader, a meditation teacher, was made to sign an undertaking not to solicit fraudulent donations again due to his advanced age, and the vinyl banners were confiscated before they were released, it has been learned.

The group was renting a house in Than Kone village, Kyaw Sitt Su group, for 150,000 kyats per month, and had changed the style of their vinyl banner to continue soliciting fraudulent donations, according to sources.

During the arrest, 6 men including the driver and 1 woman, totaling 7 people, were apprehended, while the leader remained at the rented house in Than Kone village, it has been learned.

The Oktwin Township Court today, September 3, sentenced the 8 people who hung a vinyl banner on a vehicle and went around soliciting donations to 3 months in prison and a fine of 50,000 kyats each, according to sources.
