Junta that cannot effectively address its own people's flood crisis donates aid to Nepal disaster

The junta has reportedly donated cash and food supplies to people affected by natural disasters in Nepal and the border region with China.

Deputy Minister of Social Welfare, Relief and Resettlement Dr. Than Soe, under the junta, and his team traveled from Yangon to Tribhuvan International Airport (KTM) in Kathmandu, Nepal, on the morning of September 2 aboard a military Y8 aircraft to make the donation.

"In Kale, the flooding has been severe up to today. Is it just Kale? No, nearly the whole country is suffering considerably from floods. They can't do anything for their own people, yet they go abroad to save face. If there were no disaster here, that would be different. I just want to say they are utterly useless people," a local resident of Kale told the outlet.

Regarding the donation to Nepal, the junta stated it is humanitarian assistance, expressed hope for strengthened bilateral friendship and cooperation, and offered prayers for disaster-affected people to return to normal life as soon as possible.

"At a time when people are suffering greatly from floods within our own country, going abroad to donate clearly shows they prioritize their own survival over the lives and property of the people. They are approaching regional countries under the banner of humanitarianism to overcome international isolation. But the international community will not easily recognize or accept this kind of political exploitation tactic that inflicts suffering on and neglects their own people at home in various ways," a politician told the outlet.

The junta reportedly donated 5 tons of black beans, 3 tons of chickpeas, totaling 8 tons of pulses, and US$500,000 to Nepal's Ministry of Science, Technology and Innovation.
