MyoTaw: Floods and Landslides Trap Traders and Cargo Trucks on Trade Route Between India and Rakhine State

Hundreds of traders and cargo trucks stranded due to flooding and landslides on trade route between India and Rakhine State

Hundreds of cargo trucks are reportedly stranded due to flooding and landslides on the trade route between Rakhine State and Mizoram State, India.

Starting from July 7, heavy rainfall in Lawngtlai Township and near Lunglei town in Mizoram State, India, caused landslides, and the village of Tapuchay in Paletwa Township, Chin State, along the main road, is also submerged, according to reports.

"Villages along the road are flooded. Some goods on the trucks have been damaged. Many traders are stranded, and over 300 vehicles are stuck. We can't travel by water either," said a transporter.

Goods from India are transported to Rakhine State via land and water routes up to Paletwa town in Chin State, then using the Kaladan River by water to Kyauktaw town in Rakhine State. Currently, due to flooding and landslides, both land and water routes are unusable, sources said.

"In Shinletwa village, flooding has made it impossible for motorboats to travel. Tapuchay village is also flooded, so goods can't be transported. The situation is causing shortages of medicine and supplies for flood relief," another transporter said.

Due to flooding and landslides on the main road, over 300 traders and cargo trucks from Myanmar have been stranded in Mizoram State, India, for about seven days, according to reports.
