It has been reported that the military junta has sentenced former NLD Lower House MP and dentist Dr. Saw Naing to 3 years in prison for offering alms and donations to monks and posting birthday wishes on the occasion of the 81st birthday of people's leader Daw Aung San Suu Kyi.

Dr. Saw Naing had offered rice, curries, donations, and robes to monks who were receiving alms on June 19, the 81st birthday of Daw Aung San Suu Kyi, and posted a birthday wish on Facebook expressing hope for Daw Aung San Suu Kyi's good health and swift and complete release.

On that same day, June 19, military and police personnel arrested Dr. Saw Naing and his wife at their home in South Okkalapa Township. His wife was later released, while Dr. Saw Naing was charged under Section 505(a) of the Penal Code for causing public mischief, sent to Insein Prison, and subsequently sentenced to 3 years in prison.

Under Section 505(a) of the Penal Code, the maximum penalty is up to 3 years in prison, a fine, or both. The military junta has imposed the maximum sentence on Dr. Saw Naing.

Dr. Saw Naing contested and won the 2015 election as a candidate for the NLD party from South Okkalapa Township, and was elected as a member of the Lower House. He did not contest the 2020 election.
