News is circulating in prisons that amnesty will be granted on Waso Full Moon Day, and prisons are reportedly carrying out transfers of prisoners.

Reports are emerging that the coup government will grant amnesty to prisoners who have been unlawfully detained on the upcoming Waso Full Moon Day, a Buddhist holiday falling on July 29.

"My younger brother was sentenced to 7 years after the 2021 coup, and due to issues inside, he got an additional 3 years, totaling over 10 years. Now they've sent word that he will be released on Waso Full Moon Day. With the remission days he has from previous amnesties combined with those given by the prison, it's almost certain," a family member of a political prisoner who was unlawfully detained at the start of the Spring Revolution told MyoTaw.

This morning, July 23, over 100 prisoners from Taungoo Prison were reportedly transferred to Thayawady Prison, and in recent days, some prisoners from Mandalay's Obo Prison were also taken out by prison transport vehicles, according to sources.

"It's true that prisoners are being transferred these days. It's almost certain that amnesty will be granted, and the number could be large," a source close to the prisons told MyoTaw.

Previously, on January 4, 2025, 5,864 prisoners and 180 foreigners were released; on April 17, Thingyan New Year's Day, 4,893 prisoners and 13 foreigners were released, with one-sixth of the sentence reduced for remaining prisoners; and on November 26 and 27, 3,085 detainees under Section 505 and 724 other prisoners, including those facing trials, were also released, according to reports.

During the 2026 Myanmar New Year Thingyan festival, 4,335 prisoners and 179 foreigners were released, with sentences for those serving over 40 years reduced to 40 years, and one-sixth of the sentence reduced for remaining prisoners, according to reports.
