Thai government spokesperson Ms. Rachada Thanadirek said today, July 22, that there is no concern that the Thai government's image will be damaged by the visit of coup leader Min Aung Hlaing to Thailand.
Ms. Rachada also said that the Thai Prime Minister invited coup leader Min Aung Hlaing to visit because Myanmar's situation directly affects Thailand, and only when Myanmar is at peace will those living along the Thai border also be at peace. Therefore, the Prime Minister aims to resolve problems through effective international cooperation.
She further stated that opening opportunities for Myanmar to re-enter the ASEAN community through the ASEAN Foreign Ministers' retreat discussions further reflects the goodwill of the Thai government.
When asked whether there is concern about the impact of coup leader Min Aung Hlaing's negative image on the Thai government, Ms. Rachada said there is no concern. She stated that people outside the region who are not neighbors may or may not understand the need to coexist as neighboring countries. She added that if peace and positive developments occur in Myanmar, the Thai people and Thailand will also benefit, so they should not obstruct but rather help each other.
The Thai Prime Minister is scheduled to meet with Min Aung Hlaing to discuss key issues including peace in Myanmar, drug trafficking, cracking down on online scam gangs, and environmental problems such as burning and river pollution.
Coup leader Min Aung Hlaing and Thai Prime Minister Srettha Thavisin are scheduled to meet in Bangkok, Thailand, on August 6 and 7.
