A woman collecting scrap metal died after stepping on a landmine in Palaw Township, Tanintharyi Region, according to reports.

On July 23, she stepped on a landmine planted at the intersection of Taungyarkan Village, causing an explosion, it was reported.

The deceased was identified as Daw Hla Hla Wai, a 38-year-old resident of Ward (1). She was collecting empty water bottles, soft drink cans, and beer cans for her family's livelihood when she stepped on the landmine, sources said.

"The intersection at Taungyarkan Village is an area where both armed groups travel. We don't know which side planted the mine. Now, villagers in that area have to move around with fear wherever they go," a local resident said.

Daw Hla Hla Wai died instantly at the scene from shrapnel wounds all over her body after stepping on the landmine. Her body was sent to the morgue at Palaw Public Hospital for burial, it was reported.

Previously, on June 11, a 17-year-old young man in Sintohgyi Village, Palaw Township, stepped on a mine inside his home compound, resulting in the amputation of his right leg, and he was hospitalized, according to reports.
