Nearly Double Price Increase as Thai Imports of Meat, Fish, and Vegetables Are Seized in Tachileik
September 16
It is reported that vehicles carrying frozen meat and vegetables from the Thai side into Myanmar were seized in Tachileik, on the Thai-Myanmar border, on the grounds of transporting illegal goods.
Yesterday, September 15, the Bridge (1) joint team conducted inspections and checked 18 motor vehicles, 6 three-wheeled vehicles, and 1 sidecar motorcycle—25 vehicles in total—and found them carrying 7.274 tons of frozen meat (chicken, pork, and imitation meat) and 5.493 tons of vegetables and fruits, according to reports.
"I heard the sound of the seizure yesterday. When I went to the market today, prices for everything from meat and fish to vegetables had gone up by about double. They say there won't even be anything left to sell tomorrow. Goods have always been coming in from the Thai side. I don't know why they suddenly started seizing them now. The price increases are a problem," a housewife residing in Tachileik told MyoTaw.
It is also reported that the joint team is currently conducting detailed inspections to take legal action against the 25 drivers who transported the illegal goods.
Furthermore, it is reported that the commander of the Tactical Operation Command (Settlement) Tachileik of the coup military is also inspecting vehicles with Thai license plates entering Tachileik to check whether they are bringing in illegal goods.
