A woman who stole the ornamental umbrellas from a subsidiary pagoda of the main pagoda at Oke Kyaung Monastery in Raksaw Township, southern Shan State, has been apprehended, according to reports.
On the evening of August 21, local residents spotted a woman removing the golden umbrellas from the subsidiary pagoda of the main pagoda at Oke Kyaung Monastery and surrounded her to make the arrest, it is reported.
"A girl climbed up the pagoda and was stealing the umbrellas from the subsidiary pagoda, so we surrounded and caught her. The girl admitted it and said she was doing it to sell for a living. We didn't beat her; we handed her over to the police," a local resident said.
The woman who stole the golden umbrellas is identified as Ma Ei Ei Phyo, aged 25, from Zawgyi Ward in Raksaw Town. The umbrellas that were removed have been temporarily reattached for restoration, according to reports.
The woman who committed the theft is being held at Raksaw Town Police Station, but since no one has filed a complaint yet, no case has been officially opened, it is reported.
