At least five people were killed when an Amazon Prime Air cargo plane overran the runway and crashed at Miami International Airport in Florida, United States, on the afternoon of September 6, authorities reported.

Flight 7598, arriving from Puerto Rico, was landing at the airport just before 2 p.m. when it overshot the runway and struck vehicles on the ground.

Five other people were injured in the accident, with three said to be in critical condition.

Nearly 200 rescue workers responded to the emergency as people were trapped both in the vehicles struck by the plane and in the cockpit, and cleanup and containment efforts continued into the evening due to leaking fuel, officials said.

All flights at Miami airport were immediately suspended after the crash but resumed on the evening of September 6.

The crashed aircraft was a 32-year-old Boeing 767-300 operated by 21 Air, and data from aviation monitoring group Flightradar24 indicates the plane was traveling at approximately 130 mph when it veered off the runway.

Flights at Miami airport have now resumed normal operations, and the U.S. National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) has begun on-site investigations to determine the cause of the accident.
