India strongly condemns sinking of cargo ship after attack off Yemen coast

India has strongly condemned the attack on an Indian cargo ship that was struck and sank in the Red Sea off the coast of Yemen, describing it as an unprovoked assault on a civilian vessel.

The cargo ship, named MSV Faize Noore Oliya, came under attack, and all 14 crew members, including 13 Indian nationals, were rescued by the Yemeni Coast Guard and transported to the port of Mocha, according to India's Minister of Ports, Shipping and Waterways, Sarbananda Sonowal.

India's Ministry of External Affairs also condemned the attack on the civilian vessel as a "deeply concerning incident," demanding an immediate halt to attacks targeting commercial ships in the Red Sea and the swift restoration of freedom of navigation in accordance with international law.

No group has yet claimed responsibility for the attack, but the Saudi-backed Yemeni government has accused Iran-allied Houthi forces of carrying it out using a boat laden with explosives.

Following Iran's blockade of the Strait of Hormuz, Gulf nations have been forced to reroute through the Red Sea shipping lane, and the Houthi group's maritime blockade declaration last month has heightened dangers on that route, impacting global maritime trade and energy supplies.
