Kim Yo Jong warns of new military measures in response to Japan's military buildup

Kim Yo Jong, the sister of North Korean leader Kim Jong Un, has warned that new military measures will be implemented in response to Japan's military buildup, following Japan's test launch of American-made Tomahawk cruise missiles.

In a statement released by the Korean Central News Agency (KCNA), Kim Yo Jong accused Japan of attempting to transform itself from a defensive posture into a military force capable of preemptive strikes and overseas military operations.

Kim Yo Jong also criticized Japan's participation in missile tests conducted from the Aegis destroyer in the Pacific Ocean and in US-led joint military exercises held in the Philippines in May.

Kim Yo Jong stated in the strongest terms that North Korea will respond in a way that makes Japan feel its security is more threatened than ever before, and that Japan will regret these actions.

She also condemned the United States for supporting Japan's military expansion from behind the scenes by supplying missiles and repairing warships.

"The United States is behind Japan's dangerous military activities," Kim Yo Jong said.

Kim Yo Jong said that because Japan's long-range missile capabilities directly threaten North Korea and neighboring countries, Pyongyang will also prepare new military measures.

Political analysts say North Korea is portraying Japan's military modernization as a direct security threat and attempting to justify its own weapons innovations.

Professor Yang Moo-jin of the University of North Korean Studies in Seoul assessed that Kim Yo Jong's remarks were an attempt to highlight that the United States is using Japan as an intermediary to build up military strength to counter North Korea.

Additionally, Professor Lim Eul-chul of Kyungnam University analyzed that Kim Yo Jong's warning could pave the way for possible future North Korean missile tests and displays of underwater attack capabilities.
