Two earthquakes hit Peru, leaving at least 6 dead and 21 injured

Two consecutive earthquakes struck a mountainous region of Peru, resulting in at least 6 deaths and 21 injuries, the head of Peru's National Civil Defense Institute confirmed on July 19.

The earthquakes occurred on the night of July 18, with magnitudes of 5.1 and 3.7 respectively. The epicenters were located in the Chupaca district of the Huancayo region, approximately 300 kilometers (186 miles) east of the capital Lima, according to reports.

According to a statement from Peru's National Seismological Center, the first earthquake struck at a depth of 24 kilometers (15 miles) underground, while the second occurred at a depth of 18 kilometers.

An initial statement from the European-Mediterranean Seismological Centre indicated that the first earthquake had a magnitude of up to 5.6.

"According to preliminary reports, 48 homes have collapsed and 18 have been damaged. As a result, nearly 300 people have been affected, and temporary tents have been provided for assistance," said Luis Vásquez, Director General of Peru's National Civil Defense Institute.

Furthermore, rescue operations have been accelerated since the early morning of July 19, as there may still be people trapped under the debris left by the earthquake.

Peru is located on the Pacific Ring of Fire, where approximately 85% of the world's earthquakes and volcanic activity occur.
