Drug suspect who fled while receiving treatment at hospital recaptured

A prisoner who escaped while receiving medical treatment at Sao San Tun Hospital in Taunggyi, Shan State, has been recaptured, it is learned.

The man, held on a drug-related charge, was recaptured on the evening of November 5 among the subsidiary stupas within the grounds of the Thirimingala Shwe Chan Thar Mwe Taw Pagoda in the West Quarter of Hopong town, it is learned.

"He escaped from the X-ray room at Taunggyi Sao San Tun Hospital. He had been detained on a drug charge at Aye Tharyar police station and, because he was unwell, was brought to the hospital under guard by three police officers. After escaping, he was recaptured in Hopong town. There was no beating — since he was ill, they were afraid he would die in their hands, I heard," a local resident said.

At around 12 noon on November 4, while he was at Taunggyi Sao San Tun Hospital for an X-ray because he had a fever and a cough, his handcuffs were temporarily removed and he fled from the hospital's X-ray room, it is learned.

The escaped drug suspect, named Ko Wunna Aung, has now been transferred back from Hopong police station to Taunggyi township police station, it is learned, and he has been charged under Section 19(a)/21 of the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances Law, it is learned.

There was also a previous incident on July 13, 2020, in which two prisoners held at Taunggyi township police station escaped.
