Trump May Seek to Restart Talks with North Korea After Midterm Election Loss

November 6

Analysts are assessing that President Donald Trump, who suffered a political blow in the U.S. midterm elections, may attempt to restart relations with North Korea in order to secure a foreign policy success during the remaining two years of his presidential term.

In particular, Trump is said to be interested in holding another summit with North Korean leader Kim Jong Un, whom he met three times during his first presidential term.

However, at present, Kim Jong Un's side shows little interest in resuming talks. North Korea has expanded its nuclear weapons and missile capabilities, and its relations with Russia as well as China have grown stronger, which is why it is said to have little interest in negotiating with the United States.

Kim Jong Un has previously stated that if the United States stops demanding that North Korea give up its nuclear weapons, North Korea would be ready to talk. But such a concession would not likely be acceptable to U.S. allies South Korea and Japan, it is said.

Analysts warn that if Trump sets aside the issue of North Korea's nuclear disarmament and holds talks, it could change the security situation in the Asian region and create disagreements among the United States, South Korea, and Japan.

In addition, analysts assess that if North Korea perceives Trump as being in a situation of declining political influence near the end of his presidential term, there would be no reason for Kim Jong Un to resume talks.

For Trump, restarting relations with North Korea could become a foreign policy achievement, but for North Korea, there are few points of benefit in resuming talks under the current circumstances, and even if talks were to take place, the results could be more negative than positive, analysts have assessed.
