Authorities in Putao, Kachin State, have been rounding up and impounding stray cattle since September 1 in coordination with relevant departments and ward administrative bodies, and owners are being required to pay a fee to reclaim their animals, according to local residents.

The cattle are being captured jointly by military personnel from the junta, as well as the municipal committee, general administration department, police, and ward and village administrators, it is understood.

The impounded cattle are being held in cattle pens set up by ward, and owners must go to the pens in their respective wards to check whether their animals are there and pay to take them back, sources said.

"If you reclaim your cattle on the day they are caught, you have to pay 10,000 kyats. If it goes past one night, you have to pay another 10,000," said a resident of Kaungkahtaung ward.

Furthermore, authorities have stipulated that if owners do not come to claim the impounded cattle within 7 days, they will be auctioned off, residents said.

Currently, separate cattle pens have been set up for the impounded animals in Putao's wards including Kaungkahtaung, the airport area, Lonesut, Thuttan, Myoma, and Hoko, it is understood.
