China urges Russia not to allow Japan to rebuild its military strength

July 25

Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi urged Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov that China and Russia should never allow Japan to rebuild its military strength.

The two ministers met on July 24 on the sidelines of the Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO) foreign ministers' meeting held in Kyrgyzstan.

According to a statement from the Chinese Foreign Ministry, Wang Yi urged China and Russia to strengthen strategic cooperation and preserve the outcomes achieved after World War II, stating that Japan should never be permitted to rebuild its military strength.

The Chinese Foreign Ministry also said that Lavrov stated Russia is closely monitoring Japan's military buildup and efforts to acquire nuclear weapons capabilities, and firmly opposes them.

Currently, relations between China and Japan are tense, and China often uses terms like "rebuilding military strength" and "new militarism" to criticize Japan's efforts to enhance its military capabilities.

On the other hand, the Russian Foreign Ministry's press release focused mainly on the discussions between the two ministers regarding the state of relations with the United States and the Ukraine conflict, without mentioning Japan-related issues.
