Pope Leo urges the United States to welcome and protect migrants
July 4
Pope Leo, through a message sent on July 4 to mark the 250th anniversary of American independence, has appealed to and urged the American people to welcome, protect, and care for migrants.
The Pope, who is currently on the island of Lampedusa, Italy's main entry point for migrants and refugees, included this appeal in his message to the United States.
Lampedusa is a key gateway for migrants and refugees risking their lives crossing the Mediterranean from Africa to Europe, and so far this year, over 7,000 refugees have arrived on the island.
Last year, Pope Leo also criticized former US President Donald Trump's overly strict immigration policies as "inhumane," drawing Trump's displeasure.
Now, the Pope has once again urged the world to be more humane and to collectively help those fleeing war and poverty.
Additionally, the Pope stated that within the Catholic faith's value of protecting life and property, "welcoming, protecting, and caring for migrants" is also included.
In the message, the Pope said that welcoming migrants with compassion and generosity is not just an act of charity but also a recognition of the human dignity inherent in every person.
