US Defense Secretary says cost of Iran war has reached $37.5 billion
July 22
US Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth stated during a congressional hearing on July 21 that the cost of the ongoing US-led war against Iran has now reached $37.5 billion.
While the figure reportedly includes estimated costs through September 30 of this year, it remains unclear how the Pentagon calculated this amount.
Last month, President Donald Trump requested nearly $90 billion in additional funding from Congress for the Iran war. According to a government estimate from last March, the first six days of the war alone cost $11.3 billion.
Both Republican and Democratic lawmakers have criticized President Trump and the military leadership for a lack of transparency regarding the war's developments since the US and Israel began bombing Iran.
Democratic Senator Patty Murray criticized that the president's threats against civilian infrastructure could amount to war crimes, while Senator Kirsten Gillibrand strongly condemned the government's statements as inconsistent with the current situation.
With only six months until the midterm elections for President Donald Trump's Republican Party, which controls majorities in both the US House and Senate, the cost of the Iran war is becoming a significant political challenge.
