Driver commits suicide by hanging with roof rope after losing slot game

July 3

In southern Shan State, a driver reportedly committed suicide by hanging himself with a rope beside the Aungban-Kalaw main road after losing a slot game.

On the morning of July 3, beyond the toll gate at the Aungban-Kalaw junction, while a 12-wheel vehicle was temporarily parked, the driver reportedly tied a rope used for securing the vehicle's roof cover around his neck and hanged himself near the vehicle.

"While the conductor was sleeping, he tied the rope from the vehicle roof around his neck and ended his life. I heard that last night, while playing slot games, he lost 150 lakhs (15 million kyats) in goods and 3 lakhs (300,000 kyats) in conductor fees entirely. After that, he parked the vehicle by the roadside and did this," said a fellow driver.

The deceased driver, aged 25, was identified as Ko Hlaing Min, a resident of Ward (1) in Nyaungshwe Township. The 12-wheel cargo vehicle had reportedly arrived at the scene around 2:00 AM.

"The young man was still young. The Aungban Charity Association sent him to the morgue at Aungban General Hospital. His family hasn't arrived yet. Recently, people are sending slot game websites via Viber, causing more people to suffer," said a charity member.

Previously, on May 19, in Minku Village, Pinlaung Township, a primary school teacher who was in debt after losing at slot games reportedly committed robbery and murder at a home where only a mother and child lived.
